NIMBY EXHIBITION
Opening Reception: 7 February 2020, 7 pm.

International Women’s Day 2020 takes place on March 8th, and the entire duration of March is officially designated as National Women’s History Month, so it’s no surprise that many art exhibitions taking place in Bangkok over the coming weeks feature female artists.
Of course, there are so many talented women artists in Thailand that most months of the year already feature artworks by women, however two of these shows in particular are group exhibitions, bringing together diverse yet likeminded ladies who share their messages through various visual mediums.

There’s still time to catch this group exhibition at Palette Art Space, featuring five Thai female artists examining toxic dust and various other environmental problems that are becoming more serious all the time. The term NIMBY stands for “not in my backyard” and refers to people not wanting dangerous or unpleasant things entering their community or neighbourhood. Many of the works here are fantasy or abstract paintings, but the underlying messages of environmental catastrophe and animal welfare are anything but abstract concepts. The participants in the show are: Supmanee “Tui” Chaisansook, who creates mystifyingly beautiful abstract watercolour paintings; Sudaporn “Som” Teja, an accomplished abstract artist; Sukhonthip “Kwang” Pimparian, a mixed media abstract artist; Supamat “Tian” Taweechotipat, who incorporates plastic refuse into her elegant artworks; and Salawarin “Jang” Jaijuntuk, a Lanna folk artist who deals a lot with the subject of animal cruelty.

Supmanee “Tui” Chaisansook: Explored severe air pollution and haze through abstract watercolor paintings.

Sudaporn “Som” Teja: Created accomplished abstract works addressing environmental issues.

Supamat “Tian” Taweechotipat: Incorporated plastic refuse into elegant eco-focused artworks.

Sukhonthip “Kwang” Pimparian: A mixed-media abstract artist.

Salawarin “Jang” Jaijuntuk: A Lanna folk artist who focused on the subject of animal cruelty
